Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge : Church of England Missionary Society

The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge was founded in London on 8 March 1699 at the instance of the Reverend Dr. Thomas Bray (1656-1730), rector of Sheldon, who was also instrumental in the foundation of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (see MG 17, B 1). Its Royal Charter of 1700 prescribed that it be headed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of London, with two thirds of its members being London clergymen and the remainder men "eminent for their work and affection to religion and the Church of England".

After the establishment of the S.P.G., the S.P.C.K. left the work of mission administration more and more to that sister society and concentrated its efforts on the funding of bishoprics, churches, missions, colleges, etc. For approximately a 100 years, from the middle of the nineteenth to the middle of the twentieth century, it supplied voyage and port chaplains and matrons to care for British emigrants. It was also particularly interested in the translation and publication of religious books and tracts, and in the establishment of libraries and bookshops.
