239 photographs b&w.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of historical accounts of some of the early Methodist and Presbyterian churches in Lanark and Carleton counties. Letters, notes and marriage certificates of some of the early pioneers of the Lauder-Hartney District of Manitoba. Also minutes of the Lauder Chapter of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, 1898-1914, the Ladies Aid Society of the Lauder Presbyterian Church, 1911-1917, and a historical account entitled "Pioneer Days of Napinka", 1881-1938, documents concerning Buller's Corners, Ont., 1868, the municipality of Brenda, Souris River District, Man., 1890, and Turtle Mountain District, Man., 1884. Photocopies, 390 pages.
The fonds contains 135 original photographs, 1866-1912, of activities in turn-of-the-century Manitoba including shots taken in Birch River, Man. [ca. 1912] showing the construction of Angus MacIvor's house, a team of oxen, a threshing machine; Mrs. Annie Adair and MacIvor quilting on a farm near Lauder, Man, and Jack Wallace and Joe Anderson in an automobile near Lauder. The fonds also contains 104 copied photographs depicting views of Lauder, Melgund, Napinka, and Hartley, Manitoba including photos of settlers, group shots, and farming activities, originally taken from 1895-1939.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Phillips, Gordon G., 1927- : Gordon George Phillips, public servant and historian, was born at Lauder, Man. After working at various occupations he returned to school in 1955 and graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1959 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then worked with the Canadian Patent Office, the Defence Research Board and sold real estate. A past president of the Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, he published in serial form, a history of Lauder, Man.Additional information:General note:Received during the years 1972 to 1975 from G.G.
