Fonds consists of a photocopy of the Officers' Mess Visitors' Book, Canadian Army Headquarters, 1939 to 1945, which was used, on the reverse side, as the personal guest book of Major-General H.W. Foster while he served as general officer, Commanding Eastern Command, Halifax, from 1946 to 1950. Signatures of such military and political figures as B.L. Montgomery, Dwight D. Eisinhower, W.L. Mackenzie King, and Winston Churchill could prove useful, in both, tracing locations of commanders and their units, and authenticating signatures.

Foster, Harry W, 1902-1963 : Harry W. Foster, military officer, was born at Halifax, N.S., in 1902. After receiving his primary and secondary education in Nova Scotia, England and Quebec, Foster went on to the Royal Military College, Kingston, and McGill University, Montreal. He also graduated from the Imperial Staff College, Camberly, England in 1939.

Foster began his military career in 1920, when he joined the King's Canadian Hussars, Non Permanent Active Militia, and served with that unit until 1924, when he was appointed to Lord Stathcona's Horse. From 1939 to 1941, he held a series of staff appointments with the 1st Canadian Division in England, and in the latter year, he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel and given command of the 4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards, 1st Canadian Division. Brigadier Foster returned to Canada in 1943, and commanded the Canadian component of the Kiska Invasion Force.

In 1944, Foster commanded the 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division at Normandy and, in the next year, he commanded the 4th Canadian Armoured Division, and the 1st Canadian Infantry Division. With the latter unit, Foster liberated Rotterdam in 1945. After the war, until his retirement from the army in 1950, Major-General Foster served as general officer command, Halifax, N.S. Major-General Foster died in 1963.
