Fonds consists of personal military records, including an account of Sergeant Smith's escape from German occupied Denmark during the Second World War entitled "First Out of Denmark", as well as R.A.F. Observers and Air Gunner's Flying logbook, a Galt Aircraft School student's logbook, and an aircraft notebook concerning the Lancaster Mark II (Radial Engines). Also included is a detailed biographical sketch of D.V. Smith.

Also included are photographs, by Donald V. Smith, depicting the activities and personnel of No. 402 Squadron, R.C.A.F., in the United Kingdom, 1941-1942.

Smith, Donald Victor, 1921- : Donald Victor Smith, airman, born in 1921 in Beeton-Simcoe, Ont., received his initial training with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, 1936-1939. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F.) in 1940 and saw action in Europe, 1941-1944. Returning to Canada in 1944, he became a Flight Engineer Leader and was discharged from the R.C.A.F. in 1945.

After the war, he worked with Turbo Research (later AVRO Aircraft), then Hawker Sidley Company and then Union Carbide. He also re-enlisted in the R.C.A.F. 1949-1954 and 1967-1978. He retired from the armed forces with the rank of major.
