Fonds consists of photographic material depicting personnel and activities of the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles during the South African War, 1902; General De La Rey preparing to negotiate surrender of the last Boer commando to fight in the South African War; surrender of the last Boer commando to fight in the South African War. Textual material consists of reminiscences of the life of William Athawes with particular emphasis on his South African War service. A diary, January 1902-July 1902, written about Athawes service with the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles, concerns mostly organizational and maintenance problems. Photocopy, 42 pages.

Athawes, William Frederick, 1880-1955 : William Frederick Athawes, soldier, was born in Kingston, Ont. He enlisted in the Canadian Mounted Rifles and served in South Africa. Upon his return to Canada, he lived in several locations and died in Hamilton, Ont.
