Fonds consists of photographs, newspaper clippings, and correspondence, documentating the organization of the American Legion during World War I. The documents are fragmentary and incomplete and are much akin to memorabilia. This material is located on microfilm reel M-6508.

Bullock, Charles, 1867-1942 : The Reverend Charles Bullock was born in 1867 at Cold Spring, N.Y. He was a Unitarian minister living in Ottawa, when World War I broke out. A personal friend of Sam Hughes, he was commissioned as an Honourary Captain Chaplain for the purpose of recruiting American citizens living in Canada into the 97th Overseas Battalion, the American Legion. Bullock was the Legion's recruiting officer and in 1916, he was given command of his own battalion of American volunteers, the 237th Infantry Battalion. He was appointed Temporary Lieutenant Colonel, while bearing the substantive rank of Honourary Major Chaplain.

The American Legion never took to the field as a division, but was used as support troops for various line units. When Bullock embarked for England in 1916, he was no longer in command of a battalion, but was promoted Honourary Lieutenant-Colonel. For the balance of the war, he worked with the Assistant Provost Marshall's office in London. He was posted to the Reserve of Officers in 1920.
