Fonds consists of twenty-seven letters, January-October 1900, written by Heron during his service with the 1st Battalion Canadian Mounted Rifles in the South African War. Included are the original envelopes, typescript copies of the letters, and a biographical sketch of Heron written by his son.

Heron, John Barton, 1879-1954 : John Barton Heron, soldier and civil engineer, born in 1879 at Scarborough, Ont., was educated at the Jarvis Collegiate Institute in Toronto. He was studying civil engineering at the University of Toronto, when he enrolled in the 1st Battalion Canadian Mounted Rifles and became a combattant in the South African War. After the war, he resumed his studies graduating in 1904. During World War I, he was a commissioned officer in the 1st Battalion Canadian Railway Troops and went overseas in 1916. After the war, Major Heron was employed by the Canadian National Railways.
