Fonds consists of correspondence and scrapbook relating to Gorman's war service with the Royal Naval Air Service and his personal life, 1911, 1913, 1915-1919, 5 cm; pilot's flying log book containing a record of Gorman's training and combat experience including newspaper clippings; a biographical sketch, his flight certification and the official notice of his transfer to the RNAS, 1915-1919, 3 cm.

The fonds also contains photographs depicting activities of Joseph Gorman as a student at the Stinson Aviation School, San Antonio, Texas, and as a pilot with the Royal Naval Air Service in Britain and Europe.

Gorman, Joseph, 1889-1917 : A member of a prominent Montreal and Ottawa family, Joseph Gorman, naval officer, was a sports promoter and a sports columnist of the Victoria Times from 1913 to 1915. Wishing to enlist in the Royal Naval Air Service, he received pilot training lessons in San Antonio, Texas. He then went to Great Britain and was posted at the RNAS seaplane base at Felixstown. He was transferred to Malta, then to Malpuiso, Italy, next to Manston, Kent and then back to Italy. Flight Lieutenant Gorman was killed in action in 1917 testing a triplane for the Italian Air Force.

General note:

Volume 1 was received in 1979 and 1980 from Mr. Frank Gorman of Ottawa, Ontario. Volume 2 was received in 1983 from Mr. F.A. Manning of Victoria, British Columbia. 2 photographs (Acc. 1986-092 NPC) were received from Freda M. Roy of Ottawa, Ont.
