Bayly, Henry, died 1846 : Sir Henry Bayly, military officer, was appointed Ensign in the 85th Foot on 12 April 1783. He was promoted to a lieutenancy with a rank of captain on 28 August 1973. He served under the Duke of York in the expedition to the Helder from August to October 1799. On 5 September 1799, he succeeded to a captaincy with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He was promoted to colonel on 25 October 1809 and to major-general on 1 January 1812.

In April 1816, Sir Henry was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey and he commanded the troops in Guernsey and Alderney until June 1821. On 27 May 1825, he was promoted to lieutenant-general, and on 13 September of that year given the colonelcy of the 8th (King's) Regiment, which he retained until his death.

Sir Henry was created a Grand Cross of the Hanoverian Guelphic Order (G.C.H.) in 1834, and was knighted by William IV in 1838. He received the rank of general in November 1841. He died on 20 April 1846. During the first five years' of Sir Henry Bayly's colonelcy of the 8th, the regiment was quartered variously in England, Scotland and Ireland. In the summer of 1830, the six service companies embarked for Nova Scotia, remaining there until 1833 when they removed to Bermuda and later Jamaica. After remaining in Jamaica nearly six years, the service companies were ordered to Nova Scotia and arrived at Halifax in May 1839.

On the night of 13 January 1840, the depot companies then stationed in the Island of Guernsey under Major Charles St. Lo Malet, were employed in extinguishing a fire which had broken out in a house near the church. A record was made in the annals of the Royal Court of Guernsey expressing the high esteem entertained for the corps on account of its excellent conduct and discipline and also in commemoration of its services on the occasion of the fire. The depot was ordered to Ireland in the autumn of 1841 and in December of that year, was joined by the service companies from Nova Scotia.
