Fonds consists of biographical and personal information; correspondence; information relating to organizations in which Wilson Head was involved; documents of movements and conferences dealing with social welfare and racial topics; publications of Wilson Head and other authors and also various materials such as clippings; computer print-outs relating to Wilson Head's studies of Blacks in Toronto.

Also included in fonds is a sound recording documenting a speech by Wilson Head.

Head, Wilson A, 1914-1993 : Wilson Adonijah Head was born in 1914 at Milner, Ga., and raised in Atlanta. He received his education from the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, B. Sc. in education 1940, University of Alabama, M.S.W. 1942, University of Chicago, and Ohio State University, Ph. D. in education and social science, 1958. Prior to immigrating to Canada in 1959, he had worked in Chicago as director of Parkway Community House and in Ohio as the head of the state of Ohio Juvenile Diagnostic Centre. When he came to Canada, he became the executive Director of the Windsor Group Therapy Project, and in 1965 he became the Director of research and planning with the research and planning council of Metropolitan Toronto.

He lectured part-time in social work at a number of educational institutions including the University of Windsor, 1960-1964, University of Michigan, 1962-1964, Wayne State University, 1963-1965 and Sir Williams College, Chicago, 1961-1964. He has been involved with a number of organizations including the Canadian Civil Liberties Association of Toronto as vice-president, 1967, National Welfare Council founding member and National Black Coalition of Canada, chairman and president, 1977-1982. Dr. Head became the first chairman of the Bachelor of Social Work Programme at Atkinson College, York University. He has written various articles and research studies including "The Black Presence in the Canadian Mosaic", "The Adaptation of Immigrants".

Although retired from academic life, Dr. Head remained active in organizational work. In 1982, he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from York University.

Doctor Wilson Head passed away on October 6, 1993 just following his 79th birthday.
