Parkin concerning Wallace Rupert Turnbull; correspondence, newspaper clippings, notes and commemorative items. Howe.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Stedman, Ernest Walter, 1888-1957 : Ernest W. Stedman, Air Force officer, was born at Malling, Kent, England and received his primary education at Maidstone, Kent. Following four years at a combined workshop and technical school, he attended the Royal College of Science and later the City Guilds College in London. In 1913 he was appointed scientific assistant in aeronautics at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, and on the outbreak of World War I he joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, attached to the Royal Naval Air Service. He transferred to the Royal Air Force upon its formation in 1918.
Demobilized in 1919, Stedman joined the staff of the Handley Page aircraft company and was sent to Newfoundland in charge of the firm's attempt to gain the 10,000 pound Daily Mail prize for the first trans-Atlantic flight by a heavier than air aircraft.
In 1920 Stedman came to Canada and served as chief technical officer of the Air Board and later the Canadian Air Force, 1920-1924. In April 1924, he joined the newly formed R.C.A.F. and held a succession of senior engineering positions in the service until his retirement in 1946. He represented the Canadian government at the Bikini atomic bomb tests in 1946 and from 1946 to 1955 was a professor of mechanical engineering at Carleton University, Ottawa.
His memoirs were publish posthumously.
