Macdonell, Archibald Hayes, 1868-1939 : Archibald Hayes Macdonell, military officer and senator, was born 6 February 1868 in Toronto of a family with a long military tradition. He joined the militia in 1886 and transferred to the Permanent Corps in 1892. As a member First Canadian Contingent, he served in the South African War and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order as a result of his valour in the Battle of Parrdeberg. Macdonell was also a prisoner of war for six weeks. In 1901 he obtained a position in the Southern Nigeria Battalion, West African Frontier Force and from 1901 to 1903 participated in seven expeditions against the Bush People in Nigeria.

Macdonell was sent to study at the Royal Staff College, Camberley 1906-1907 to obtain advanced military theory. Returning to Canada, Major Macdonell was appointed to the Maritime Provinces Command. He commanded troops during the Dominion Coal Strike, Glace Bay, July 1909 - March 1910. Subsequently he was transferred to the Western Ontario Military District.

As a Lieutenant-Colonel, he went overseas in 1915 with the First Canadian Contingent and became commander of the Royal Canadian Regiment. He remained with his old regiment until he was transferred to the command of the Fifth Canadian Infantry Brigade in 1916. As a result of his service he was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, 1917. In the same year he was recalled to Canada to organize the New Brunswick Military District. Major General Macdonell was appointed to the Senate in 1921 to replace his brother who had resigned from it. Macdonell died on 12 November 1939 at Rothesay, N.B.
