The fonds consists of correspondence with publishers concerning the Count Frontenac and William Lyon Mackenzie biographies, 1880, 1909-1917; legal documents concerning the Lindsey vs. Le Sueur lawsuit over the Mackenzie biography, 1913; clippings relating to W. L. Mackenzie and the lawsuit, 1881, 1906-1913; manuscripts and notes for part of the Mackenzie biography and articles on Acadians and Loyalists, n.d.; page proofs of the Mackenzie biography on 2 microfilm reels, [1913]; and Le Sueur family correspondence which includes, for example, letters between William Dawson Le Sueur and his sister Isabella Hay Stitt, and notes on the correspondence by Cicely Pierrot, 1988.

Le Sueur, William D. (William Dawson), 1840-1917 : William Dawson Le Sueur was born 19 February 1840 at Quebec, the son of Peter LeSueur and Babara Dawson, and educated at the Ontario Law School and University of Toronto. He entered the public service in 1856 and worked in the Post Office Department until his retirement in 1902. From 1888 to 1902 he served as Secretary of the Department. He was well known as an author of historical books and articles, including 'Count Frontenac' (1906), part of the 'Makers of Canada' series. His projected life of William Lyon Mackenzie, intended as part of the series, was not published because of a court injunction obtained by Mackenzie's heirs. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1903 and died 28 September 1917 at Ottawa.

General note:

The microfilm copy of the proofs and the photocopies of the judgment and notes were received in 1958. Originals were received in 1961 from Mrs. H. H. Mathews and in 1988 from Mrs. Cicely Pierrot. Additional photocopies were received in 2001 from Dr. Clifford G. Holland.

Location of originals note:

The original page proofs of the Mackenzie biography are in the possession of Mrs. H. H. Matthews of Ottawa (reel P-149) and the University of Toronto Library (reel P-149A). The originals of the photocopies donated in 2001 are with the descendants or heirs of the late Mrs. Sheila K. George and Miss Muriel Sissons, formerly of Whitby, Ontario.
