1 watercolour gouache.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of personal and business correspondence; subject files including material relating to Aldwinckle's trip to the Soviet Union; manuscripts, music sheets by Aldwinckle and Harry Somers, and an interview and notes relating to his art lectures; publications; scrapbooks and clippings containing examples of Aldwinckle's illustrations and a few clippings.
The fonds also includes photographic material depicting Aldwinkle's art work; places in the Soviet Union, especially Moscow, 1954; aerial views of Aldwinkle, England, 1944; and other photographs by the artist taken throughout the course of his career.
Also included are prints and drawings by Eric Aldwinkle throughout his career as a commercial designer and artist including original designs and posters for Toronto General Trusts and the Stratford Festival, and while an instructor at the Ontario College of Art. Other drawings consist of three sketches of All Saints' Church, Aldwinkle, England, as well as drawings executed during a trip to Georgia, U.S.S.R., with Fred Varley, 1956. Additional graphic material includes three cut and paste collages.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Aldwinckle, Eric : Eric Aldwinckle, artist, was born in Oxford, England on January 22. He and his family immigrated to Canada in 1922. Largely self-taught, he pursued a career as a graphic artist, landscape and figure painter and muralist. He worked as a freelance graphic designer in Toronto in 1928. He was a member of the Canadian Society of Graphic Arts and became a member of the Ontario Society of Artists in 1936, when he began teaching at the Ontario College of Art. An amateur actor, he was associated with Hart House. He signed up for the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and was an official war artist with the R.C.A.F. overseas from 1943-1945. He produced many war posters inspired by the Soviet school; in 1944, he served in France and Belgium. When he came home in 1945, he was appointed vice-president of the Ontario College of Art; in 1946, he was named director of the New School of Design.
He was graphic art director for the University of Toronto, 1948-1953, and Stratford Festival, 1955-1959. In 1954 he visited the Soviet Union with artist F.H. Varley. Among Aldwinckle's works are murals completed for Sunnybrook Hospital and York Township Hydro. Over the years, he held various positions at the university and in Toronto art circles, among them the Arts and Letters Clubs Toronto.
