The textual records in the fonds consist of correspondence; notes and tracings of surveys made by Thompson; International Boundary Commission, correspondence and material, photocopy; correspondence and supporting documents concerning boundaries, photocopy; miscellaneous documents; David Thompson's Narrative on his Explorations in Western America; speeches by Dr. Tyrrell at unveiling of memorials to Thompson; printed matter ; and a notebook kept by Tyrrell while a student at University of Toronto.

The graphic material in the fonds consists of photographic material depicting Flathead Lake and Stoners Dock, Montana; ruins of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta; portrait of Annie Elizabeth Thompson; former home of Reverend John Bethune and David Thompson in Williamstown, Ontario; monument to David Thompson in Mount Royal Cemetery designed by Henri Hebert and erected in 1912. Photographs are by Hillman, Kalispell, Montana, J.B. Tyrell, and Topley, Ottawa, Ontario.

Tyrrell, J.B. (Joseph Burr), 1858-1957 : Dr. Joseph Burr Tyrrell, geologist, author and explorer, was educated at Upper Canada College, the University of Toronto and Victoria University. He served with the Geological Survey, 1881-1898, exploring vast areas of Western and Northern Canada. He then practiced as a mining engineer and served as president of Kirkland Lake Gold Mining Co.

He published several works including David Thompson's Narrative of his Explorations in Western America, 1784-1812, which he edited for the Champlain Society in 1916. He served as president of the Champlain society, 1927-1932, and was elected F.R.S.C. in 1910.
