The fonds is grouped into three series: records relating to the Western Front, 1914-1920; the Italian and Eastern Fronts, 1914-1918; miscellaneous and personal, n.d., 1915-1919, 1937-1938.

The fonds contains official British photographs of military operations in France and Italy, 1915-1918. The fonds also contains photographs showing personnel of the Canadian Contingent attending the Coronation of King George V; and Duke of York's School, London, England, 1911. Photos by Gale and Polden.

Most of the papers are concerned with military intelligence and originated with the intelligence corps.

The personal papers relate essentially to Mitchell's private life insofar as that can be distinguished from his military career. Like the papers in the other two groupings of records, they are are arranged alphabetically by type and subject.

Mitchell, Charles Hamilton, 1872-1941 : Brigadier-General Charles Hamilton Mitchell, born in 1872 at Petrolia, Ont., received his education from the University of Toronto, B.A.Sc. 1894, C.E. 1898, and Stevers Institute of Technology, New York, D. Engn. 1922. After graduating from the University of Toronto he qualified as a civil engineer and specialized in hydro-electric power development. He was responsible for the design and construction of a number of plants in the Maritimes, Ontario and Western Canada. In 1919 Mitchell was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Engineering at the University of Toronto, a position he held until his death in 1941. In 1924 he was with American representatives on the Joint Board of Engineers to study the feasibility of a St. Lawrence waterway.

Mitchell joined the Militia in 1899, and between 1911 and 1914 he served as Divisional Intelligence Officer in the Second Division General Staff. During World War I he occupied staff intelligence appointments with the Canadian and British Forces in both France and Italy, and in 1919, served as an intelligence Officer at the War Office in London, England. He was awarded a number of honours and decorations, including French, Belgian and Italian awards.

Transferred from the Directorate of History, D.N.D. which had acquired it in 1942 from General Mitchell's estate.

Arrangement note:

The papers are arranged in three groupings: the Western Front, Italian and Eastern Fronts, and Personal Papers. Those relating to the two theatres of war are arranged alphabetically by type, e.g., reports, and subject, e.g., communications, and while this arrangement gives rise to a certain amount of overlapping, the placement in type categories of only those items which are not clearly encompassed by the subject files has kept overlap to a minimum.
