Buller, Cecil, 1888-1973 : Cecil Buller (Cecil Tremayne Butler) was born in Montreal. She is the daughter of Dr. Frank Buller, noted Canadian opthamologist and McGill University Professor. She studied at the Art Association of Montreal under William Brymner (c.1907-10); the Art Students' League in NYC (c. 1910-12) and in Paris. It was there that she decided to concentrate on graphic arts. During World War I she corresponded with Major Talbot Mercier Papineau. During this time, she resided in London, England, and Paris. She moved to London in 1915 and studied wood engraving at the London County Council School. She returned to France for further study and in 1917 married John Murphy at Dijon. After the war, the couple settled in NYC. In the years that followed, Buller became a distinguished wood engraver. Her watercolours, also outstanding, were done mainly on illustration board; the NGC has one, Breton House (1915). Her seried of wood engraving, Song of Solomon - Cantique des Cantiques, was published in folio form by Editions du Raisin, Paris (1931).
She died in Montreal at the age of 87 (1973).
