Hoare during his journeys to the North. The journal entries are extensive and faithfully kept. They describe his travel difficulties, routes, and people met along the way. Hoare used material from some of the journals for his published report 'Conserving Canada's Musk-Oxen'. Also included is a 'blotty' kept by William and a brief biography and bibliography of articles prepared by Sheila C. Thomson. The journals and blotty total 23 cm; biography and bibliography, 3 pages.
The Aklavik diary kept by Catherine details the Hoare's journey from Ontario to Aklavik, and cover travelling, people encountered along the way and daily life in Aklavik. Catherine's Pangnirtung diary from that year records her work and social life during her time there. An additional notebook records her birdwatching sightings in both Pangnirtung and Florida. The journals and notebooks total 2 cm.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Hoare, W. H. B., 1890-1948 : William H.B. Hoare, missionary and public servant, born at Ottawa in 1890, was educated in Ottawa schools and was apprenticed as a steamfitter. He was an Anglican lay missionary to the Inuit from 1913 to 1923. While in the North, he travelled widely on mission work and became fluent in Inuit. He was Special Investigator, North-west Territories and Yukon Branch, Department of the Interior, from 1924 to 1931. During this period, he travelled extensively on field work in the barrens north of Great Slave Lake as far as the Coronation Gulf and east to Hudson Bay, as well as in the Yukon and on Victoria Island. His most notable expedition was to the Thelon Game Sanctuary in 1928-29.
His last northern expedition was as assistant to C.H.D. Clarke to investigate the Thelon Game Sanctuary in 1937. From 1939-1948, he was a Special Constable, R.C.M.P. Headquarter's Division in Ottawa.
Hoare, Catherine : Catherine Hoare (née Cowan) studied at The Lady Stanley Institute for Trained Nurses in Ottawa, graduating in 1918 as an obstetric nurse. In 1920, she accompanied her husband William on a journey from Ontario to Aklavik, Northwest Territories, where they worked as Anglican missionaries. In 1958, she travelled to Pangnirtung to work as a nurse in St. Luke's Hospital.Information additionnelle :Historique de la conservation :Material from W.H.B.
