Fonds consists of Department of Munitions and Supply material, 1939-1945; Industrial Defence Board material and material relating to the Joint United States-Canada Industrial Mobilization Planning Committee, 1948-1952; Canadair Ltd. correspondence, statements and reports, 1950-1965; Canada Arsenals Ltd., reports and memoranda, 1947-1963; and speeches and articles, 1942-1950.

The fonds also contains photographs, ca. 1940-1955, showing the interior of a munitions factory; the Atoms for Peace Conference, August 8-20, 1955; and photos depicting the career of J.G. Notman.

Biographie/Histoire administrative :

Notman, James Geoffrey, 1901- : James G. Notman, manufacturer and public servant, was born in Montreal and educated at McGill University. He began working for Dominion Engineering Works Ltd. in 1926, retiring as president in 1965. He held a number of corporate directorships including one in the family photographic firm of Wm. Notman & Sons Ltd..

In 1942 he joined the Department of Munitions and Supply under C.D. Howe, and acted as Assistant Coordinator of Production, chairman of the Machine Tool War Service Committee, and a member of the Joint Arsenals Planning Board. As Director of Canadian Arsenals Ltd., he was a member of the Industrial Defence Board in 1949-1950. He became President of Canadair Ltd. in 1952.
