Fonds consists of diaries, notebooks, and journals describing the life of R.H. James in Channel, Nfld. in the 1890s and his different commands during the First World War. Also included is a very heterogeneous body of material relating to the 159th Overseas Battalion, C.E.F., the 8th Reserve Battalion, Shorncliffe, and the 7th Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops, France, 1893-1943.

Fonds also includes individual and group portraits, photographs of Newfoundland, and other photographs relating to war.

The fonds also contains five medals: Masonic Grand Lodge A.F. and A.M. of Canada, Hamilton, 1925; photo of Memorial Hall, O.A.C. Guelph, lapel button, 1927; Mason Medal; Masonic Membership Medal, Silver Lodge, Cobalt, Ontario; and the name tag of Colonel R.H. Broughton, Toronto, Ont.

James, Reginald Heber, 1876-1951 : Reginald Heber James, born in Carbonear, moved to Channel, Nfld. in the 1890s where he worked in a steamboat agency. He moved to Toronto in 1899 and began attending university. He then went to Parry Sound and eventually to Cobalt where he became manager of the O'Brien Mines.

Lieutenant-Colonel R.H. James' military career began in Parry Sound as a Lieutenant in the 23rd Infantry Regiment, Northern Pioneers. In 1916 he was appointed Captain and Adjutant of the 159th Overseas Battalion, which was the first purely Northern Ontario battalion. Later transferred to the 8th Reserve Battalion, he finally served in France as Adjutant of the 7th Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops. In 1920 he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel of the Northern Pioneers. He served as a recruiting officer from 1940 to 1943 initially in Northern Ontario and then later in Toronto.
