The collection consists of two books of material relating to the history of Horton Township, compiled by Douglas Eagles. One is an alphabetically arranged list of births, marriages and deaths, 1751-1895, indexed; and the other contains historical accounts of the churches and cemeteries, illustrated by photographs and maps, together with tombstone recordings of 19 cemeteries, 1767-1973.

Eagles, Douglas E. (Douglas Eaton), 1927-2008 : Douglas E. Eagles was born about 26 Aug 1927 in North Grand Pré, Kings, Nova Scotia, the son of Nathaniel Faulkner Eagles and Julia Woodsworth (Eaton) Eagles. He received his B.Sc. in 1948 and his M.Sc. in 1950 from Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Professionally, he was a research chemist with Imperial Oil Enterprises Limited, Sarnia, Ontario. He was also a genealogist and local historian who researched and wrote about the Eagles and Lockhart families and the communities of Kings County, Nova Scotia. He died 22 May 2008 in Sarnia.

Horton (N.S.) : Horton Township was in Kings County, Nova Scotia, which faces the Bay of Fundy and the Minas Basin. It was probably named in honour of Horton Hall in Northamptonshire, England, the residence of George Montagu Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax (1716-1771), who was President of the Board of Trade, 1748-1761. After the expulsion of the Acadians in 1755, the area was repopulated mainly by settlers from New England who arrived in 1760-1761. The township system of government was abolished in 1857. Library and Archives Canada's published collection holds a copy of "A History of Horton Township, Kings Co., Nova Scotia, through Maps and Documents", by Douglas E. Eagles (Sarnia, Ontario, 28 February 1975).

Custodial history:

The first book in this collection was compiled in 1974 by Mr. Douglas E. Eagles of Sarnia, Ontario, who in the same year presented photocopies to the National Archives of Canada, as well as to the Library of Acadia University, Wolfville, N.S., and to the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, Halifax, N.S. Mr. Eagles compiled the second book also in 1974, and in 1975 presented photocopies to the National Archives of Canada and to the Public Archives of Nova Scotia.

Arrangement note:

The books, originally catalogued under the title of the Eagles Collection in MG25-G190, were transferred to their present place, MG9-B9-24, in 1987.
