Fonds consists of material relating to Bushnell's career as a broadcaster and a businessman and includes correspondence, memoranda and briefs regarding the development of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission and the CBC. Fonds also includes correspondence, memoranda and clippings documenting the development of Bushnell's broadcasting company, Bushnell Communications Ltd. as well as drafts of Bushnell's biography by Peter Stursberg, 1925-1975.

The fonds also contains photographs of employees of the CBC, 1934; the Commonwealth Conference on Broadcasting, 1945; Bushnell's activities at the CBC, including coverage of royal visits, 1936-1959; and Bushnell Communications (CJOH-TV), 1960-1975.

Fonds also contains a variety of sound recordings of radio documentaries collected by Bushnell during his career with the CBC and in private broadcastings. Topics include the 1951 Royal tour and F.D. Roosevelt.

Bushnell, Ernest Leslie, 1900-1987 : Ernest Leslie Bushnell was born in Bethany, Ontario. He studied at the Toronto Conservatory of Music and later became tenor soloist of the Elm Street United Church. In 1921, he joined the Adanac Male Quartet and toured both Canada and the United States.

Bushnell is best known for his distinguished contributions to public broadcasting. He began a radio advertising agency in Toronto in 1927 and when it failed that year he took a position with radio station CFRB as joint station manager of CFRB and moved to CKNC as an announcer in 1928, Bushnell was drafted by the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission (CRBC) in 1933 to organize its western network programming. He was soon appointed director of English Language Programmes, a position he retained with the CRBC's successor, the CBC, in 1936. During the Second World War he directed the activities of CBC Overseas Reporting Unit and helped the British Broadcasting Corporation reorganize its shortwave service to North America. In 1944, he became Director of General Programs and in 1952, Assistant General Manager of CBC.

In 1959 Bushnell resigned his position as Vice-President of CBC to organize Bushnell Broadcasting Associates Limited. He soon became president and general manager of his own TV station, CJOH-TV, in Ottawa, Ontario, an affiliate of the CTV Network. Bushnell resigned as Chairman of Bushnell Communications Limited in 1975. He died in Ottawa, at the age of 86 on April 30, 1987.

Received in 1975 and 1976 from Ernest L. Bushnell. Volumes 14 and 15 were transferred in 1977 from the Peter Stursberg papers.
