Fonds consists of correspondence and speeches of Lt.-Col. W.A. Bishop and his family; newspaper clippings, programmes and pamphlets concerning the activities of Lt.-Col. Bishop. There is also correspondence and notes accumulated by his son, W. Arthur Bishop, during the preparation of his father's biography, "The Courage of the Early Morning", volumes 1 and 2; includes clippings and magazines volumes 3 and 4, 1916-1965.

The fonds contains photographs, ca. 1916-1955, depicting English country scenes, ca. 1950, various fighter aircraft used by the Allies in World War I, and portraits of Billy Bishop. The fonds also contains three photographs showing W.A. Bishop and W.G. Barker with a Fokker DV12 aircraft, Leaside, ont., September 1919; photos by Pringle and Booth of Toronto.

Bishop, William A., 1894-1956 : W.A. "Billy" Bishop was born in Owen Sound, Ont. and educated at the Royal Military College, Kingston. He served overseas in World War I with the Canadian Cavalry, transferring in 1915 to the Royal Flying Corps. He joined the 60th Squadron in 1917 and began a distinguished career as a fighter pilot. In 1917 he was promoted to captain and major. In 1918 he was given command of the 85th Squadron, and promoted to lieutenant-colonel. He was appointed to staff the British Air Ministry and formed the Royal Canadian Air Force as a separate brigade. Bishop was officially credited with destroying a total of 72 enemy aircraft, and won numerous awards and honours.

After a brief partnership with another Canadian ace, Lt.-Col. W.G. Barker, in the Bishop-Barker Flying Co., he then engaged in business in England for some ten years. On his return to Canada in 1931 he assumed directorships in several companies and became vice president of the McColl-Frontenac Oil Co. He was appointed honourary Air Vice-Marshall, R.C.A.F. in 1936 and honourary Air Marshall on full duty during World War II. He was the author of Winged Warfare, 1917, Flying Squad, 1926, Winged Peace, 1945.

Textual records and most photographs received in 1976 from Mr. W. Arthur Bishop of Toronto, Ont. Volumes 3 and 4 were transferred from the Directorate of History, D.N.D. Three photographs were received in 1934.
