Fonds consists of personal and biographical materials; material related to Magill's career as student, university professor and Presbyterian minister; labour questions; the Western Canadian grain industry and Magill's involvement with various grain regulatory agencies.

The fonds also contains photograph of the church and manse at Maghera, Northern Ireland, ca. 1900; "Thornmount", Northern Ireland; portraits of Robert Magill as Chief Commissioner, Board of Grain Commissioners, ca. 1912, Banff, Alberta and of Rev. William Magill in Winnipeg, Manitoba, 1930.

Magill, Robert, 1871-1930 : Robert Magill, public servant, minister and professor, was born at Drumlee, Northern Ireland, and educated in Belfast and at the University of Jena, from which he obtained a doctorate in Philosophy in 1899. Ordained in 1899, he served a Presbyterian congregation at Maghera, 1900-1903. He became a professor and subsequently principal at the Presbyterian College, Halifax, 1903-1909, and a professor of philosophy at Dalhousie University, 1909-1912.

He was appointed Chairman of the Nova Scotia Commission on Hours of Labour in 1908, Chairman of the Saskatchewan Elevator Commission in 1910, and Chairman of a conciliation board investigating a strike at the North Atlantic Collieries in Port Morien, N.S., in 1911. He served as the first Chief Commissioner of the Board of Grain Commissioners for Canada, 1912-1916, Chairman of the Board of Grain Superivsors for Canada, 1917-1918, and Secretary of the Winnipeg Grain Exchange, 1916-1929.
