Fonds consists of genealogical tables of the Hodgson family; material relating to the marriage of Peter Humphrey and Melvina Hoover in 1873, including letters of courtship, 1872-1873; correspondence, professional and personal papers, 1891-1975, including a diary of 1909, of Dr. Ernest Atkinson Hodgson; correspondence, professional and personal papers, 1945-1980, 17 cm, including his publication The Heavens Above and the Earth Beneath: A History of the Dominion Observatories up to 1970, written in two parts by Dr. John H. Hodgson, photocopy, 35 pages (.8 cm).

The fonds also consists of photographs depicting various activities of Ernest Atkinson Hodges and his family.

Hodgson, Ernest Atkinson (family) : Dr. Ernest Atkinson Hogdson received formal training in mathematics, astronomy and seismology. His work from 1920 until 1950 as the first Chief Seismologist of the Dominion Observatory earned him an international scientific reputation and established seismology as an area of serious Canadian scientific inquiry.

Dr. John H. Hodgson, son of Dr. Ernest Atkinson Hodgson, is also a seismologist of international reputation. He has worked in private industry, university, government and the United Nations. He joined the staff of the Dominion Observatory in 1949 and from 1952 until 1964 served as Director, Division of Seismology. Between 1964 and 1973 he served as Director-General, Earth Physics Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources in Ottawa and upon retirement in 1973 became Chief Seismologist and Project Manager, UNDP/UNESCO Regional Seismological Programme in Southeast Asia.
