Fonds consists of personal diaries, letters, certificates and clippings bearing on Dunlop's service in the 33rd Howitzer Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, First Canadian Divisional Ammunition Column. While the letters, certificates and clippings are scattered and commemorative in nature, the diaries cover the years from 1914 to 1919 and are a detailed personal record of a combatant in the Canadian Field Artillery. The entries on the constant and repetitive shelling, the weather, the cumbersome and infrequent troop movements and the efforts to break the monotony of battle through leisure activities. One diary from late 1918 to 1919 when Dunlop remained in France, and included a certificate signed by Winston Churchill, and a schedule of events for the Canadian Corps Championship on Dominion Day, 1918. There is also a certificate of condolence from the Freemasons on the death of Dunlop.

Photographic material depicts the activities of Lieutenant Hugh M. Dunlop, 33rd Howitzer Battery, Canadian Field Artillery in Canada, Britain, and France during World War I; a group photo of a Seniors' Curling team which won the Dofasco Trophy, Hamilton, Ontario, 1958.

The fonds includes one Boys' Brigade award medal engraved to H. Dunlop and one USA Masonic commemorative medal.

Also included is philatelic material consisting of a postal cover addressed to Lieut. H. Dunlop, Hamilton, Ontario, bearing a "Hamilton Industrial Exposition July 6-8/14" slogan die cancel postmark.

Included in horizontal storage: Commission as Lieutenant, 1913, container 2.

Biography/Administrative history:

Dunlop, Hugh MacDonald, 1880-1965 : Hugh MacDonald Dunlop, soldier and businessman, was born at Hamilton, Ont., enlisted as a soldier in the South African War, but did not see any active service. He served in the Militia 1901-1904 and rejoined the service in 1912. When the First World War broke out, he held the rank of Lieutenant and served in the 33rd Howitzer Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, First Canadian Divisional Ammunition Column. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1915 and spent the war on active service in France and Belgium. In 1925, he and his father acquired the Gillies-Guy Coal Company and he later became president and treasurer of the James Dunlop Company. He retired in 1949.

Dunlop was prominent in Hamilton community service and was an active Mason in the Ancient and Accepted Order of the Scottish Rite in Canada.
