Photographic material in the fonds includes: various depictions of Thomas Tait; a photo album documenting the life of the Green family; St. John's College, Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan; agriculture in the Northwest Territories; conditions as an Anglican rector in several parishes; wartime conditions in England during WWI; military career of Anson Green, including life in east and west Sandling camps, Kent, Ceasar's Camp, Shorncliffe, England; trips in the U.S.A., Algeria, Italy, Gibraltar and Belgium; photographs taken in various Québec and Vancouver locations; a portrait by W. Hanson Boorne of the Hon. Thomas White, Minister of the Interior, and party, Calgary, Northwest Territories; Melbourne "Myrnong" family gatherings and tennis parties.
The fonds also contains philatelic material: 1918 military postal covers addressed to Lieut. H.A. Green et al, Richmond, Ontario, bearing "1914-15 Disabled Service War Seal" and "National Economy" envelope re-use label; World War II "Airgraph" cover postmarked Aug. 22, 1942; postal cover bearing a 1947 United Nations promotional Pitney Bowes postage meter impression; postally-used cover and contents: Canada pioneer aerial mail service, Toronto to Ottawa, September 2-3, 1918. Cover bears "The Aero Club of Canada, August 25, 1918" airpost sticker.
Also included is one German World War I medal struck to commemorate the sinking of the RMS Lusitania by the German Navy and a porcelain minature portrait by Hugo Meisel of Miss Jessie White.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Green, Anson, b. 1893 (family) : Henry Anson Green, business manager and soldier, was born in Ottawa, April 4, 1893, the son of Reverend William Henry Green and Annie Johnston Green, née White. He attended Trinity College School, Port Hope, and Eganville High School. Upon graduation in 1909, he was employed by the Merchant's Bank of Canada at the Eganville branch. Following several moves with the Bank, Green was working in the Toronto main office at the outbreak of World War I.
In November 1915, he joined the army as a private in the Fifth Universities Company Reinforcements. Sent overseas in April 1916, he was commissioned a Lieutenant in England and transported to France later that year with the Royal Canadian Regiment. Green was severely wounded soon after his arrival in France and recuperated in England before returning to Canada where he was medically discharged in 1917.
He returned to the Merchant's Bank employ for a short period before joining M.J. O'Brien Limited in Renfrew, a holding company headed by Senator M.J. O'Brien. Beginning as a bookeeper, Green eventually became Managing Director and was at one time Secretary Treasurer or Vice President of fourteen different companies, including The Canada Gulf Terminal Railway, The Renfrew Woollen Mills, and Delora Mining and Smelting. He continued his military association by joining the active militia, becoming a Major in the Governor General's Foot Guards in the early 1930s. H. Anson Green married Mary Monica O'Halloran on October 4, 1922. They had three children, Mary Monica, George Henry Anson (Harry), and Thomas Melbourne Anson.Additional information:General note:Received in 1984 from H.
