Fonds consists of textual records including correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, speeches, lectures, articles and subject files related to the activities of Canadian ornithologist Hoyes Lloyd. Textual records have been divided into three series as follows: Correspondence and subject files; Corresponse; and Scrapbooks.

Fonds also includes graphic material reflecting the interests and activities of ornithologists; nature; wildlife; and general interests. Graphic material located in ten albums has been divided into ten files as follows: Album one; Album two; Album three; Album four; Album five; Album six; Album seven; Album eight; Album nine; and Album ten.

Also included in fonds are a number of loose photographs depicing individuals and groups related to ornithology including the American Ornithologists Union; nature scenes; and wildlife. Also included are several portraits of Grey Owl.

Fonds also consists of original art work including bust-length portrait silhouettes of various ornithologists including Hoyes Lloyd, ca. 1920s; glass slides of cartoon images related to bird conservation and politics by Lloyd, ca. 1930; and greeting cards by wildlife artist Claude Edward Johnson, sent by Johnson to Lloyd between 1938 and 1958.

Lloyd, Hoyes, 1888-1978 : Hoyes Lloyd was born in Hamilton, Ontario, 30 November 1888. He received his university education at the University of Toronto where he specialized in chemistry. In 1910 he was appointed Assistant to the Head of the Chemistry Department. Two years later he became a chemist for the City of Toronto's Health Laboratories, having been the University of Toronto's official candidate. His task was to improve Ontario's milk supply by trying to eliminate tubercular cattle.

Throughout his life, Lloyd was an avid bird watcher and collector. On 11 December 1918 he became Canada's first Dominion Ornithologist. He was appointed game officer by the Justice Department and was given the powers of a Justice of the Peace throughout the Dominion. He was responsible for the enforcement of the Migratory Bird Regulations under the Convention Act. His responsibilities gradually expanded to include responsibility for all of the wild life in Dominion parks and for administering the Northwest Game Act. One year after joining the Parks Branch of the Department of Interior, his title was changed to Supervisor of Wildlife Protection in Canada. In 1943 Lloyd retired from this position to pursue his ornithological interests around the world.

Lloyd was a member and one time president of the American Ornithologist' Union. In 1923 he became President of the Ottawa Field Naturalists' Club. Throughout his career he wrote articles, pamphlets, gave public lectures and radio interviews to publicize the importance of bird conservation. Lloyd died in 1978.

General note:

Textual records were acquired from Winston Mair of British Columbia, and Elizabeth J. Lloyd of Ottawa, Ont. in 1984. The photocopies were acquired in 1985 from Dr. Marianne G. Ainley of Montréal, Que. Graphic material acquired with textual material from E. Lloyd was thereafter transferred to the Picture Division, National Photography Collection, and the Public Archives Library and accessioned as 1984-178 (NPC), 1984-173 (PIC), 1984-129 (PIC), and 1989-501 (DAP).
Material in accession 1985-030 (DAP) was acquired from Elizabeth Lloyd in February 1985. Artistic material was then transferred to the Documentary Art and Photography Division and accessioned as 1989-409 (DAP).
