Maclean consisting of seven files including family notes, anecdotes, correspondence on his retirement from the government, letters of congratulations and replies upon being awarded the C.B.E., certificate of birth, biographical information, a memento of a banquet given in his honour by the membership of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway Employees, autographed by the guests, 2 files of correspondence between Maclean and the Department of Labour while he was in Newfoundland, July-August 1950, and a certificate proclaiming M.M. Maclean a member of the National Capital Commission, horizontal storage, container 2.
Photographic material depicts scenes of Ottawa, Ontario, including street cars on Bank Street, 1955; Booth mansion after a fire, 1956; second convention of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railraod Employees, 1909; 50th convention of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railroad Employees, 1958; various Canadian Congresses of Labour, 1942-1958; portraits of Maclean.
Also included in this fonds is a Queen Elizabeth II Coronation medal.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Maclean, Murdoch Mackay, 1887-1966 : Murdoch Mackay Maclean, labour leader and public servant, was born and educated in Pictou County, N.S. At the age of 16, he joined the Intercolonial Railway working out of Halifax, N.S. In 1908 he was a founding member and first Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway, Transport and General Workers (then called the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway Employees). He became an organizer for the Liberal Association of Halifax County, 1913-1915, and then Circulation Manager of the Chronicle Publishing Co., 1915-1917.
In 1917 he returned full-time to the union as Secretary-Treasurer and editor of the Canadian Railway Employees Monthly (forerunner ot the Canadian Transport) where he remained until 1941. M.M. Maclean played a prominent role organizing the All Canadian Congress of Labour and the Canadian Congress of Labour and was a member of the Executive Board for both organizations. In 1942 he resigned from the union when asked by the Department of Labour to accept the position of Director of the newly formed Industrial Relations Board. He remained in this position until he retired in 1958.
M.M. Maclean was a member of the National Film Board (1943-1950), the Unemployment Insurance Investment Committee and the National Capital Commission, 1959-1963. He was made a Commander (Civil) of the Order of the British Empire in 1946. M.M. Maclean married Edna Cecilia Scriven (d. 1966) in 1933 and they had four children.
