Additional records consist of career, personal and family related papers and photographs including correspondence and items relating to fame singer and composer Dan Hill.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Hill, Daniel G, 1923-2003 : Daniel Hill was born on November 23, 1923. He was a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C., Daniel G. Hill continued his studies, first at the University of Oslo in Norway, and then at the University of Toronto where he received his M.A. and his Ph.D. in sociology in 1960.
His extensive background in the field of human rights began with educational work with new Canadians at St. Andrews Memorial House in Toronto. From 1955 to 1957 he was Research Director of the Social Planning Council of Metropolitan Toronto and later became Executive Secretary of the North York Area Planning Council.
In 1973 after serving 9 years as Director and almost 2 years as Chairman of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, Dr. Hill resigned to undertake private consultant work in the fields of human rights, human relations, legal aid and civil liberties. In addition he was a special advisor to commissions investigating community and race relations, correctional services, mind development groups, policing and native rights. From 1984 to 1989, he was Ombudsman of Ontario. Dr. Hill has written numerous articles and books on both human rights and Black history of Canada. His publication, "The Freedom Seekers, Blacks in Early Canada" was approved by the Ontario Ministry of Education for use as a history textbook.
Involvement in the Canadian Civil Liberties Association by both Dr. Hill and his wife Donna is indicated in the briefs and submissions presented to various standing committees on justice, legal aid, fair employment and human rights affairs.
