2 prints : lithographs.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of a microfilmed diary, 1899-1901, with daily entries from November 1899 to April 1901 relating to the formation of a Canadian contingent for service in South Africa, the voyage, and various engagements in the South African War. This material is located on microfilm reel M-300. In addition to the microfilm, the fonds also consists of original records: subject files including reports, memoranda, correspondence, war diaries, and other materials concerning military administration, personnel, and training, 1914-1919.
The fonds also contains War Loan posters,"On les aura!" and "On ne passe pas!". Both of the posters depict soldiers carrying rifles on a battlefield. "On les aura!" is by Jules Abel Fawre and "On ne passe pas!" is by Maurice Neumont, 1916-1918.Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Turner, Richard E. W. (Richard Ernest William), 1871-1961 : Lieutenant-General Sir Richard Ernest William Turner, born in 1871 at Quebec City, was commissioned in the 10th Queen's Own Canadian Hussars in 1892. He was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1900 for his service with the Royal Canadian Dragoons in the South African War. During World War I he commanded a brigade of the 1st Division from 1914 to 1915, and the 2nd Division from 1915 to 1916, after which he assumed responsibility for the training of Canadian troops in England.
In 1918 he became Chief of the General Staff at Canadian Military Headquarters in London, England. On his return to Canada, he served on the Canadian Pension Tribunal and the Canadian Pension Commission for about ten years.
