Holy Blossom Hebrew Congregation (Toronto, Ont.) : The congregation of Holy Blossom Temple, Toronto, is the oldest Jewish congregation in Canada west of Montreal. The Hebrew Congregation of Toronto purchased land on Pape Avenue for its cemetery in 1849, although it was not until 1856 that the first meeting of the Sons of Israel Congregation took place. In 1858 the Congregation changed its name to the Holy Blossom Toronto Hebrew Congregation. It built its first synagogue on Richmond Street in 1876. After receiving its provincial charter as a religious institution in 1894, it built a new synagogue on Bond Street in 1897.

A schism among its members over matters of ritual and philosophy led to affiliation with the Reform movement, and in 1920 the Congregation became affiliated with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Land was purchased at Bathurst Street and Ava Road in 1937 and a new synagogue was opened there on its present site in the following year. As the needs of the Congregation outgrew the original building, additions were made in 1961 and the expanded temple compex provides school, chapel; and other facilities.

General note:

A copy of the Holy Blossom Congregation's Minute Books, 1890-1899 and 1900-1912, were received in 1976 from the American Jewish Archives, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A. (reel M-4601). A copy of all the Congregation's records was received from the Archives of Ontario. These records had been lent to the Archives of Ontario for microfilming from the Holy Blossom Temple (reels M-5925 to M-5931). A second copy of reel M-5928, which contains the Congregation's registers of births, marriages and burials, was received from the Archives of Ontario.
