In addition to the textual files, the fonds contains caricatures, a photo lithograph album, postcards, and photographs of journalists and Canadian political figures, 1895-1972.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Smith, I. Norman (Irving Normand), 1909-1989 : Irving Norman Smith, or INS as he was sometimes known to distinguish him from his father, was born in Ottawa on 28 October 1909, the son of Ernest Norman Smith and Bessie Irving. His father was the owner of the "Ottawa Free Press" newspaper which merged with the "Ottawa Journal" in 1917. I. Norman Smith was educated at Lakefield College School and then attended business college before joining the "Ottawa Journal" as a reporter from 1928 to 1930. From 1932 to 1938 he worked as a reporter with Canadian Press in Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver, New York and London, England, opening its London office in 1938. During this period, he made a large circle of friends in journalism and diplomacy in Canada, the United States and Britain with whom he kept in contact for the remainder of his life.
Smith returned in 1938 to work at the "Ottawa Journal". He joined the Public Relations branch of the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and wrote a booklet on the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. He returned to the newspaper late in 1940, eventually rising to become President and Editor in the years from 1962 to 1972, retiring in the latter year.
Smith was a member of the Press Gallery in Ottawa, Chairman of the Commonwealth Press Union and Canadian Secretary in 1962, and President of Canadian Press from 1970 to 1972. He received the National Newspaper Award for Foreign Correspondence from the Canadian Press Club in 1955 and was named a member of the Canadian News Hall of Fame in 1979. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1967, received an L.L.D. from Brock University, and received a D.Litt. from Carleton University. He was a Director of the Ottawa Community Chest Campaign, Governor of Lakefield College School, and member of the Board of Governors of Carleton University with a particular interest in its School of Journalism. He also served on the Board of "The Canadian Churchman", a periodical of the Anglican Church of Canada.
Smith wrote a number of books, including "The Journal Men" (1974) and "A Reporter Reports" (1960), and edited works like "The Diary of E. W. Harrold" (1947) and "The Unbelievable Land" (1964). He also produced pamphlets on subjects such as the history of the Rideau Club and was much in demand as a speaker particularly in the field of foreign affairs.Additional information:General note:Textual records received from Mr. Angus Morrison, Rideau Club in 1985 and from Mrs. Frances Smith in 1994.
