Fonds consists of a diary, entitled "Hong Kong Diary and Memories of Japan" recording the experiences and thoughts of Private Thomas Smith Forsyth, Winnipeg Grenadiers, from November 1941 through the summer of 1945. Also included is a modern typescript copy of the diary with a nominal and subject index.

Forsyth, Thomas Smith, 1910- : Private Thomas Smith Forsyth joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers in 1939. He saw garrison service with the regiment in Jamaica, from May 1940 through September 1941 and was part of the force sent to defend Hong Kong in November 1941. He was a prisoner of war in Hong Kong and Japan, from 25 December 1941 through the summer of 1945.

Copy of original diary received in 1972 from the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature. A transcript produced and indexed by Dr. Charles G. Roland, History of Medicine, McMaster University, was received in 1993.
