Fonds consists of the diary of John Wightman Warden, 1918-1919 with outline notes, and notes and miscellaneous items, n.d. in four files. An additional four files contain memorabilia of John Wightman Warden, 1904-1942; Correspondence from J.S. Matthews about John Wightman Warden, 1942-1946, 1965; Official papers and memorabilia relating to Ruth and Olive Warden, 1942-1946; and Warden and Wightman Family correspondence and memorabilia, 1786, 1811-1826, 1876-1889, 1906, n.d..

The fonds also consists of four photographs, 1918, depicting the advance of Dunsterforce through the Caucasus to Baku, U.S.S.R..

Warden, John Wightman, 1871-1942 : Lieutenant Colonel John Wightman Warden, military officer, was born in Bayswater, New Brunswick in 1871. He served in the South African War and afterwards, with Baden Powell's Constabulary in South Africa until 1907. Returning to Canada, Warden worked as a broker and was a councillor for West Vancouver. During the First World War, he served as a company commander of the 7th (B.C.) Battalion, was wounded at the Second Battle of Ypres, and later, commanded the 102nd Battalion (North British Columbians) at Regina Trench, Vimy and Passchendaele.

Warden served with Dunsterville's British mission in Baku and then, took Indian troops to Siberia and served in Vladivostok, running a White Russian training school in 1919. Returning to Canada, he ran unsuccessfully for the British Columbia legislature in 1920 and engaged in business. In 1930, he was appointed warden of the Essex County Jail. He retired in 1941 and died in 1942.

Note générale :

The diary of John Wightman Warden and associated notes were donated by Olive Warden in 1972. Four additional files of memorabilia, correspondance and official papers were donated by Ruth Warden in 1989.
