Fonds consists of microfilmed papers relating to early broadcasting initiated by, and under the direction of, Canadian National Railways, 1923, as a service on their transcontinental trains and subsequently developed into the national network system that came under the control of the Canadian Broadcasting Commission, 1923-1933, microfilm reels M-537, M-538, M-584 and M-715. In addition to the microfilm, there are nominal correspondent files, n.d., 1913-1968, 60 cm; subject files, n.d., 1911-1968, 280 cm.

Fonds also consists of photographs. Subjects include various events, exhibition displays, transportation, historic sites, portraits including aboriginal chiefs, radio stations and E.A. Weir's activities at the Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph, Ontario, ca. 1911.

Additionally, there are three ribbons/medals in the fonds, awarded by the Ontario Agricultural College Class 1912; the Young Farmers Club, International Daily Cattle Judging Contest Umpire 1925; and the Young Farmers Club, International Daily Cattle Judging Contest Umpire 1927. Received from Murray Weir, son of E. Austin Weir.

Weir, Ernest Austin, 1886-1968 : Austin E. Weir, broadcaster, born in Randwick, Ont., was educated at OAC and the University of Toronto. He went west in 1913 to work with the Farm and Ranch Review, and later the Nor'West Farmer and the Grain Growers' Guide.

While in Winnipeg he became associated with the Rural Credit Societies and later served as chairman of the Board of Trustees and manager of the Province of Manitoba Savings Office. In 1924 he joined the Colonization Department of Canadian National Railways in London, England, and was responsible for publicity in Britain and later, Europe. In 1929 he returned to Canada as Director of Radio for the CNR and was involved in a number of that company's early broadcasting successes.

After serving briefly with the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission, Weir pursued private broadcasting, returning to the national network in 1937 after the organization of the CBC. During his CBC career, Weir worked in various capacities including Commercial Manager and Supervisor of Press and Information. Following his retirement in 1956, Weir continued to act as a consultant and, in 1965, authored The Struggle for National Broadcasting in Canada.

General note:

Portions of the papers were microfilmed in 1961 and 1963. Original material, some of which had been microfilmed previously, was received in 1966-1967 from E.A. Weir. Further original material was received in 1970 from the Weir family; approximately 5 cm of original material was received from the CBC Historical Section. Photographs were received between 1966 and 1989 from Ernest Austin Weir, Mrs. M.B. Weir and Murray Weir.
Academic certificate and a scroll honouring Weir on his retirement from the CBC and a Direct Mail Leaders Award, 1942, are in horizontal storage.
