Fonds consists of microfilmed personal and business correspondence, manuscripts, printed material related to the career of Elise Aylen Scott and her husband, Duncan Campbell Scott, 1971-1975, microfilm reels M-5481 and M-5482.

Also included in the fonds is a photographic portrait of Elise Aylen in Rapallo, Italy.

Aylen, Elise : Elise Aylen, author and writer, was born in 1906 and grew up in Ottawa. Her father, Henry Aylen, practised law in the city. Her grandfather, Sir John Bourinot, wrote several books on Canadian history and her uncle, Dr. Arthur S. Bourinot, edited the Canadian Poetry Magazine. As a schoolgirl, Aylen wrote poetry on romantic themes. In 1930 the Macmillan Company published a collection of her poems, Roses of Shadow, with a foreword by Duncan Campbell Scott, whom she married one year later. During the 1930s and 1940s she contributed verse and short stories to the Dalhousie Review, Queen's Quarterly and Saturday Night under her maiden name.

Following the death of her husband, Elise Aylen Scott left Canada in 1948 for Ceylon. She then visited places of historical and religious significance throughout the new state of India over the next two years. She met Swamiji Yogeshwaranda who became her spiritual mentor and friend. She settled near Almora near the Himalayan Mountains and lived there until 1962 when she moved to Coonoor, Nilgiris, for health reasons. Elise Aylen Scott's later writing reflected the eastern influence. Several works appeared in periodicals edited in India and Ceylon. The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (The Institute of Indian Culture) published her novel, The Night of the Lord, in 1967. Elise Aylen Scott died of cancer in 1972.

Textual material was microfilmed in 1980 from originals held by Mr. and Mrs. John G. Aylen of Ottawa, Ont. The photograph was acquired in 1946 from Elise Aylen. The original manuscripts, from which the microfilms were made, were acquired by the Literary Manuscripts Section of the National Library of Canada in 1993.
