Finding aid Textual records (Electronic) Part I of the finding aid is a file list of volumes 1-4. In addition, it describes the contents of the correspondence series in vol. 1, and provides a microfilm shelf list of reels H-1019 to H-1021. Part II of the finding aid was prepared by the North York Public Library and describes each item in reels M-5563 to M-5564. Included are the following microfilmed records: additional correspondence, manuscripts, photographs and memorabilia, 1863-1969, related to Canadian artists and writers who corresponded with MacTavish during his career as editor of The Canadian Magazine and as a member of the Civil Service Commission. This material is located on microfilm, reels M-5563 to M-5564.
Fonds also contains photographs depicting the home and family life of Newton MacTavish; portrait of Kate Johnson MacTavish by Lyonde; carte-de-visite of D. Baker; views of Union and Staffa, Ontario, ca. 1900.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:MacTavish, Newton McFaul, 1877-1941 : Newton MacTavish, journalist, editor and author, was born in Staffa, Ont., where his father practised medicine. Upon completion of his education at Seaforth Collegiate Institute, MacTavish worked briefly as a bookkeeper and salesman before becoming a reporter for the Toronto Globe in 1896. He was its correspondent and business representative in Montreal from 1900 to 1906, while studying English literature at McGill University. In 1906 he assumed the editorship of The Canadian Magazine, a post he retained until 1926 when MacTavish became a member of the Civil Service Commission of Canada.
He wrote articles for such periodicals as The Canadian Magazine, Saturday Night and Scribner's Magazine; contributed to The Encyclopedia of Canada, 1932/35, and The Canada Year Book 1931; and published three books: Thrown in, 1923, The fine arts in Canada, 1925, and Ars longa, 1938. MacTavish was active in several organizations such as the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto and the Ottawa branch of the Canadian Authors' Association. Newton MacTavish died in Toronto in 1941.
