Macphail, Agnes Campbell, 1890-1954 : Agnes Campbell Macphail, born on March 24, 1890, at Grey County, Ont.; died on February 13, 1954, at Toronto, Ont. After graduating from teacher's college in Stratford, Ontario, Macphail accepted several rural teaching positions in southwestern Ontario. She became involved in politics while she was working in Sharon, where she joined the United Farm Women of Ontario and attended meetings of the United Farmers of Ontario (U.F.O.). She wrote a column for the Farmers' Sun and frequently spoke on behalf of U.F.O. political candidates. This led the farmers of her Grey-Bruce area to ask her to be their candidate in the 1921 election, the first federal election in which women were permitted to run for election. Running as a member of the Progressive Party, she was elected with a large majority and served in Parliament until 1940, sitting at various times as an independent and as a representative of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.During the first 14 years, she was the only woman in the House of Commons. She was also the first woman member of a Canadian delegation to the League of Nations.

She was a champion of the underdog, not only of struggling farmers but of miners who were on strike for better wages and all the poor and underprivileged. She made prison reform her special concern. By visiting prisons and publicizing the bad conditions, Macphail brought about many improvements. She founded the Elizabeth Fry Society of Canada. Macphail was also involved in the formation of the CCF, serving on the National Executive.

She was defeated in the 1940 federal election. She was later elected to the Ontario legislature andmserved there from 1943 to 1945 and from 1948 to 1951, as a member of the CCF. She was responsible for Ontario's first equal pay legislation. Macphail worked as a journalist after her electoral defeat. She died just before a Senate appointment was announced.
