Fonds consists of material documenting Spencer's career as a Member of the House of Commons and, more generally, contains papers illlustrating the politics, ideas and Parliamentary actions of the United Farmers of Alberta and its role with other co-operating groups such as the Progressives. Fonds also contains material documenting Spencer's activities with the Unitarian group and its role in the Comox Valley. It also consists of material sent by Spencer to M.J. Coldwell in which can be found the views of the United Farmers of Alberta, its political platforms and Parliamentary organization. The papers held by Glenbow Museum contain copies of correspondence and notes as well as Spencer's personal commentary on the Social Credit, monetary reform, health programs and other issues of party interest.

The first three series are also available on microfilm reel H-1970; the fourth series, the Glenbow holdings, is located on microfilm reel M-8504.

Fonds also contains photographs of Henry E. Spencer, Robert Gardiner, and E.J. Garland, 1921-1938.

Spencer, Henry Elvins, 1882-1972 : Farmer member of the House of Commons.

Henry Elvins Spencer was born in England 7 March 1882; worked as a printer and publisher in Paris, France, 1906-1907; came to Canada in 1908, and became a farmer in Alberta. He was provincial secretary of the United Farmers of Alberta from 1917 to 1921. He was elected to the House of Commons for the United Farmers of Alberta in 1921 and re-elected in 1925, 1926, and 1930. He was defeated in 1935, and again as a C.C.F. candidate in 1945. In Parliament he was secretary of the U.F.A. group 1921-1935, and of the larger co-operating group (Progressives) from 1926-1935. He moved to Comox, British Columbia in 1948, and died there 1 October 1972.

General note:

Most of the papers were accumulated by Henry Spencer and donated by him in 1954 with explanatory notes at that time; "Material sent by Spencer to M.J. Coldwell" was transferred from the New Democratic Party. The papers on Unitarian activities were donated by the Comox Valley Unitarian Society in 1991. The microfilm of the Glenbow Museum's holdings of Spencer's papers was received in 1991 in exchange for a microfilm copy of the National Archives' holdings.
