Her father was a partner of Mackay Bros. Wholesale Drygoods Merchants. Grandfather George Baptist was a pioneer lumberman at Trois-Rivières. In 1909, Cairine Reay Mackay married Norman F. Wilson, a lumber merchant, and former MP for Russell County, Ont. (1904-1908).
Cairine Reay Wilson took an active interest in the Liberal Party and in numerous philanthropic organizations, and in 1930 William Lyon Mackenzie King appointed her Canada's first woman Senator. Senator Wilson was the first Chairman of Canada's National Committee on Refugees and Victims of Political Persecution, first and only President of the League of Nations in Canada, first woman delegate to the United Nations Assembly, and first honorary life member of the Canadian Association for Adult Education.
Senator Wilson was for many years President of the Princess Alice Foundation for the Training and Development of Youth Leaders, and Honorary President of the Save the Children Fund. She was also associated with the Ottawa Welfare Bureau, the Ottawa Y.W.C.A., the Victorian Order of Nurses, the National Federation of Liberal Women and the Canadian Welfare Council. For her important work on behalf of refugee children, which included establishing liaison between the Canadian Welfare Council and the National Committee on Refugees, Senator Wilson was created a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur by the Government of France. She was a Dame of Grace, Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and received honorary degrees from both Queen's and Acadia Universities.
