1 wood fragmentLangue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Fonds consists of papers concerning the National Archives of Canada including letters reporting on archival work done by Norman Fee in Europe in 1956; letters of thanks from historians and visitors to the archives; memoranda, speeches, and scripts of radio broadcasts. Collected material includes an original document from the Court of King's Bench, District of Montreal, dated 1796; pieces of wood allegedly cut from the wreck of Jacques Cartier's ship La Petite Hermine; a minute book of the Ottawa Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire, 1918-1919; a handwritten manuscript entitled "Recollections, Volume 1," by Sir Arthur Doughty; and numerous published materials on historical subjects.
Fonds also consists of photographic material including a Canadian Pacific Railway brochure, and photographs by Fred C. Wurtele, McDonald Studio, and James Vey.
Also included in this fonds is a print by Morris (late 18th century) entitled "Various Dresses of the Indians of North America" as well as a booklet of sights, scenes, and wonders at the World's Fair, St. Louis, taken by the Official Photographic Company.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Fee, Norman, 1889-1973 : Norman Fee, Archivist, was born on 15 August 1889 in Ottawa, Ontario, the son of Samuel and Jane (Scobie). He was educated at Queen's University. He joined the Federal Civil Service in 1906 and was assigned to the Dominion Archives Department. He toured the U.S. with the Canadian war exhibits in 1916 and was sent to England by the Archives Branch in 1917. He served in the First World War as 2nd Lieut, R.G.A., 1917-1918, and was awarded the Military Cross for his service. He returned to the Archives after the war and was Chief of the Map and Chart Division from 1925-1946 and from 1939 on he was also Assistant to the Dominon Archivist. In 1948 he was acting Dominion Archivist until the appointment of W. Kaye Lamb in 1949. He served as special assistant to the Dominion Archivist from 1956 until his retirement in 1964.
Fee married Bessie Grant Claire on 23 June 1915 and had 2 children. He was widowed in 1952 and later married Millicent Carter Davis.Information additionnelle :Note générale :The letter and enclosure from G.P. de T. Galzebrook, regarding W.L. Grant's "History of Canada", was transferred in 1972 from the Cartographic and Architectural Archives Division. The line engraving and print were received from Mrs. Norman Fee and the booklet, photographs, and brochure were received from Norman Fee. Several items concerning Fee's church work and personal affairs were transferred in 1977 from the records of the Public Archives of Canada (RG 37).
