Fonds consists of Leader of the Opposition files, 1939-1960, 12.80 m; personal files, 1938-1968, 5.31 m. The fonds also contains photographs depicting activities of John Bracken, including portraits of Bracken and family. In addition, there are sound recordings of a talk given by Colonel George A. Drew about Great Britain's domestic war effort and Sir Winston Churchill, 1941.

Bracken, John, 1883-1969 : John Bracken, born in 1883 at Ellesville, Ont., received his education from the Ontario Agricultural College and the University of Illinois, B.S.A. He moved to Western Canada as a young man and became involved with such farming organizations as the Dominion Seed Board, Manitoba representative, 1906, and Fairs and Farmers' Institutes in Saskatchewan, Superintendent, 1907-1910. He was Professor of Field Husbandry, University of Saskatchewan, 1910-1920, and President of the Manitoba Agricultural College, 1920-1922.

John Bracken was Leader of the United Farmers of Manitoba in 1922 and Premier of Manitoba from 1922 to 1943. He was Leader of the federal Conservative Party from 1942 to 1948 and was a Member of the House of Commons from 1945 to 1949. He was Chairman of the Royal Commission on Manitoba Liquor Laws in 1954, and appointed as a Member of the Privy Council in 1962. He died in 1969.

Note générale :

Transferred in 1968 from Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings, and received in 1969 from Mrs. John Bracken of Manotick, Ont. Three files were transferred in 1977 from the George Drew papers.
