Fonds contains textual records related to Clifford M. Johnston's career as an amateur salon photographer and his involvement with the organization of the Canadian International Salons of Photographic Art, as well as some personal correspondence. These records are divided in three series: photographic correspondence, 1925-1939; personal correspondence, 1888, 1911-1938; and printed material and clippings, 1927-1940.
Fonds also contains award medals for photography received by Clifford M. Johnston.
One photo accession consists of two matted and signed exhibition type prints by Clifford Johnston, and three Christmas cards. The prints are a landscape of trees in early spring and of an old building; the Christmas cards include a tipped-in image and printed message from Welch & Johnston Limited, Ottawa. The card from 1941 (two copies) includes an image entitled "Sorting Logs" on the Gatineau River; the card from 1943 includes an image entitled "Remember the 'Athenia'", of a tug boat. a. 1927-1937].Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Johnston, Clifford M., 1896-1951 : Clifford M. Johnston was an engineer whose hobby was photography. Born in Parry Sound, Ontario in 1896, he studied at Queen's University and served in Canadian Army Medical Corps (1917-1919), photographing architectural details and parks of London and coast of Cornwall. He entered the competitive world of international salon photography about 1929. Johnston's salon experience fitted him to become one of the key organizers of these functions in Canada. As a member of the executive of the Camera Club of Ottawa, Ont., he worked to establish the annual Canadian International Salons of Photographic Art, first held in 1934. Johnston was elected a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 1936.
