0.3 cm of textual records photocopies.Langue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Fonds consists of a microfilmed thesis entitled "The Honourable Irene Parlby", by Claire McKinlay containing a brief account of life in Western Canada, 1896-1914, the United Farm Women of Alberta, and the United Farmers of Alberta. Other microfilmed material includes the Grain Grower's Guide and the U.F.A. Government, 1921-1935, also newspaper clippings and miscellaneous documents belonging to Mrs. Parlby, microfilm reel M-587. There is also a biographical sketch by the Calgary Power Limited and the Alberta Historical Review, photocopy, 9 pages, n.d., 1959, 0.3 cm.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Parlby, Irene, 1868-1965 : Irene Parlby, née Marryat, was born in 1868 at London, England, and immigrated to Canada in 1896, settling in Western Canada. She was an early supporter of the United Farmers of Alberta, (U.F.A.) and in 1913 helped to form the first Women's local. She was elected provincial president of the United Farm Women of Alberta in 1916 and supervised this province-wide organization. She was a Member of the Provincial Legislative Assembly of Alberta, 1921-1935, and served as Minister without portfolio.
Throughout her political life she helped to sponsor advances in the fields of education, public health and women's rights. Following her retirement from politics in 1935 she received an honorary degree from the University of Alberta.
