1 photograph col.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:The fonds consists of textual records relating to Matheson's parliamentary role in the adoption of the new national flag, 1964-1968, 1975; public speeches, 1948, 1968, 1977; and membership in the Masonic Order. In addition, there is a polaroid colour photograph of the original silk screen purchased by J. Cook from Peter Barrett, February 1964, depicting three stylized maple leaves.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Matheson, John Ross, 1917- : John Ross Matheson, born in 1917 at Arundel, Que., received his education from Queen's University, B.A. 1940, Osgoode Hall, Barrister-at-Law 1948, University of Western Ontario, L.L.M. 1954, and Mount Allison University, M.A. 1975. From 1940-1944, he served overseas with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery.
After practising law in Brockville, Ontario, he was elected Member of Parliament for Leeds in 1961 and was re-elected in 1962, 1963 and 1965. He was Chairman of the National Flag Committee of the House of Commons and was later active in connection with the development of the Order of Canada. In 1968, he was elevated to the Bench as County Court Judge for Ottawa.
