Fonds consists of files created by Gerald Baldwin during his tenure as M.P. for Peace River, Alberta, 1958-1980. Series include: Public Accounts Committee, 1965-1969; Freedom of information, 1963-1979; Constituency correspondence, 1945-1980; Government scandals, 1973-1979; Speeches and broadcasts, 1967-1972; and Press releases, 1969-1972.

The fonds also contains a map of the Peace River crop disaster area, n.d.

Baldwin, Ged, 1907-1991 : Gerald William Baldwin, was born in 1907 at Palmerston North, New Zealand, and emigrated to Alberta, Canada at a very young age. He was educated at Edmonton and Vegreville High Schools and was affiliated with the University of Alberta while articling in law. Called to the Bar in 1928, Baldwin practiced law in Vegreville, Barhead and Peace River, Alta., and was created King's Council in 1942. He also saw service with the 14th Royal Canadian Field Artillery, 3rd Division, in Britain and in north-west Europe, from 1944 to 1945.

He served as Councillor for both the Town of Peace River, Alta., and the Municipal District of Peace River. An unsuccessful candidate in the 1935 Alberta Provincial Election, he entered federal politics in 1957 and was elected to the House of Commons in the 1958 general election as the Progressive Conservative Member for Peace River. Baldwin continued to represent that riding until his retirement in 1980.

During his twenty-two year term as a Member of Parliament, Baldwin served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, 1962 to 1963, House Leader, 1968-1973, and was re-appointed Opposition House Leader, 1974. In addition, he chaired the Public Accounts Committee, the Caucus Committee on Justice and the Special Committee on the Constitution, and was actively engaged in Parliamentary attempts to secure a Freedom of Information Act.
