Fonds consists of manuscripts, in thirteen bound volumes, of Ewart's unfinished, "A Political History of Canada 1759-1848"; and memoranda and printed material relating to Ewart's involvement in legal cases and judicial decisions before the courts of Canada and Great Britain.

The fonds also contains a three-quarter standing oil on canvas portrait of John Skirling Ewart, K.C. (1848-1933), by Dorothy E. Vicaji.

Ewart, John S. (John Skirving), 1849-1933 : J.S. Ewart, lawyer, author, publicist, was born in Toronto, Ontario, and received his early education at Upper Canada College. He then studied law at Osgoode Hall and was called to the Ontario bar in 1871 and to the Manitoba bar in 1882. During his legal career, he acted as the representative of the Catholic minority in the Manitoba Schools Question. He lived in England in 1909 while involved in the British case concerning the North Atlantic Coast Fisheries Arbitration at the Hague. He was a strong advocate of Canadian constitutional independence and published a number of historical and political works, among them, "The Roots and Causes of the War 1914-1918" and two series of brochures, "The Kingdom Papers", 1911-1914 and "The Independence Papers", 1925-1930.
