Fonds consists of correspondence and clippings, including transcripts of letters of recommendation, clippings and a testimonial concerning Harriss; letterbook with copies of correspondence sent by Harriss in relation to musical performances by various Canadian and American artists; subject files relating to various music festivals; miscellaneous correspondence, reminiscences and clippings.

Also included is one half-length portrait of Dr. Charles Albert Edwin Harriss and a pastel portrait by Thomas Herbert Hall of Charles Albert Edwin Harriss, 1919.

Biography/Administrative history:

Harriss, Charles A.E. (Charles Albert Edwin), 1862-1929 : Dr. Charles Harriss, musician, impresario, composer, was born in London, England, and educated at St. Michael's College, Tenbury. He came to Canada (Ottawa) in 1882 and in 1883 became the organist of Christ Church Cathedral, Montreal. In 1891 he began touring the United States and Canada as a concert artist, subsequently acting as tour manager for other artists and orchestras. He founded and directed the McGill University Conservatory of Music, 1904-1907, at the same time embarking upon his principal work of organizing and directing large choral and orchestral concerts throughout the British Empire, the United States and Europe. In 1909, Dr. Harriss founded the Imperial Choir, an organization comprising many smaller choirs, totalling 4500 singers. His numerous works have been performed throughout the British Empire.
