Abbott, Douglas Charles, 1899-1987 : D. C. Abbott, born in Lennoxville, Que., was educated at Bishop's College, McGill University, and Dijon University in France. He served overseas, 1916-1918. He was a parliamentary assistant to the ministers of National Defence and Finance, 1934-1945. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1940 after having practised law in Montreal. He served as Minister of National Defence (Naval Services), 18 April 1945 to 11 December 1946; Minister of National Defence, 21 August 1945 to 11 December 1946; and Minister of Finance, 10 December 1946 to 30 June 1954. In 1954 he was appointed Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Canada. He retired in 1974.
